Abstract

High ability students are a heterogeneous group, so their conceptualization is not univocal. There is a great diversity of names, theoretical models, and cognitive and socio-affectivecharacteristics in this regard. This leads to the existence of certain confusion in the generalpopulation, which in turn influences the detection, identification and intervention of this studentbody. There is no doubt that this group requires a specific educational response, which is scarceat the university education. For this reason, the University of La Laguna has launched theATENEA-ULL program, which aims to increase the academic motivation of this group. The objective of this study is to know the conceptualization that both teachers and students haveabout high abilities. The open question referred to what they understand by high abilities isposed to both groups. The answers were analyzed with the ALCESTE program. Based onthese results, the conclusion is that teachers have an idea that is adjusted to and coincides withexisting models of high abilities, and that there is considerable consensus in the conception thatstudents have of high abilities.
