Abstract

Characterization of the volcanotectonic elements of the Caldera de Taburiente, Teide and Timanfaya National Parks has been carried out in this research by means of the structural study from volcanic, geologicaland geomorphological points of view, together with a Fault Population Analysis in several measurement stations located throughout the whole area of the islands in which these parks are located: La Palma, Tenerifeand Lanzarote. The fact of covering the whole territory of the islands has permitted to have the adequatebackground constraints to establish the strain paths at a local and regional level, as well as to define the morphology of the strain ellipsoid. With these data, the preferred directions for the ascent of magmas in futureprocesses of volcanic reactivation have been established, together with their orientations with respect to present volcanic structures, which constitutes a fundamental fact in active volcanic areas such as the case of Canary Islands. In the Timanfaya National Park, a seismic and magnetic network has been deployed, installedand maintained in operation for 30 months. This network has permitted to characterize the seismo-volcanicactivity in the park, finding a high number of volcano-tectonic events and a few long-period events; bothof them are typical events recorded in active volcanic areas. Although a clear relationship between seismicevents and fault or fracture lineations cannot be established, nor with changes in the magnetic field, thisnetwork has permitted for the first time to locate the volcano-tectonic events, as well to calculate their magnitudes and number of events. The great volume of seismic and magnetic recorded data will give a uniqueopportunity to make new analysis and re-interpretation of data in the future with new even better results.
