Abstract

Spanish pronoun tú has two referential meanings: the deictic one which prototypically index the interlocutor and another one not referring to him/her but leaning on the second person to express generic or argumentative contents. This is the non-specific or generic tú we have recalled objectivizing túas a discoursive resource which displaces the content away from specific circumstances of speaker: it is a use of tú (‘you’) instead of yo (‘I’). We will analyze the expressed and the omitted variant of objectivizing tú in conversational and mass media texts of Corpus Conversacional del Español de Canarias. Differences of objectivizing meaning among variants are gradual, each one coappears with diverse linguistic elements which contribute to shape this meaning and they obtain uneven frequencies in the texts analyzed.
