Abstract

During Franco’s regime, the role of women was limited to the private sphere, oriented towards domestic life, marriage and motherhood. The Feminine Section organized different courses to train women, marked the aims and ideals of the dictatorial regime. During the last years of the Franco regime, the creation of the Housewives’ Association, linked to the National Movement, served to channel various training activities for women. However, the women used the structure of the Feminine Section for their demands and the struggle to achieve equality. Underground and under the protection of official institutions women’s mobilization began. Some women moved in the orbit of the political parties, and from different forums they began to denounce the subordinate situation of women, they were even relegated in the clandestine political parties. In the framework of the anti-Franco struggle and from within the Communist Party of Spain, the beginning of the Women's Democratic Movement began to take shape. Not only militants and the women of the prisoners were organized, but also women outside the party with a democratic and egalitarian political conscience.
