Abstract

Despite its scant territorial and demographic dimension, Qatar has an external projection of a much larger country, more typical of a medium or regional power. The keys to such a peculiarity lie in the intelligent combination of its enormous energy resources, the establishment of an important network of regional and international alliances, and a clearly assertive foreign policy. Aware of its vulnerabilities and lack of hard power, Doha has strategically used its energy, economic, diplomatic and media strengths in order to maintain the survival of a dynastic regime and State in an environment of high geostrategic interest, but also unstable, full of threats and prone to conflict.
