Abstract
Introduction. Lower respiratory tract infections demands a significant care in pediatric services, they follow a stationary pattern. Objective. To analyze SARS-CoV-2 pandemic impact on the epidemiology of lower respiratory tract infections. Patients and methods. Retrospective study of pediatric admissions in a tertiary hospital, along 12-month, six in the pre-pandemic COVID-19 period and six in the pandemic period. Demographic, clinical and management variables were collected. The epidemiology of lower respiratory tract infections in both periods was analyzed. The statistical package used was SPSS v23. Results. 1036 admissions, 630 pre-COVID and 406 in the COVID period. There was 46.6 % vs 12 % admissions for lower respiratory tract infections, in both (P <0.01). There was a significant decrease in admissions for lower respiratory tract infections in children under 2 years of age during the pandemic (P <0.01), although the proportion of admissions in patients with lung disease increased (P = 0.03). The disappearance of respiratory syncytial virus and influenza in the COVID period vs 64 % in the pre-COVID period and the persistence of enteroviruses / rhinoviruses stands out. Conclusions. In the COVID period, there was a decrease in the demand for care secondary to lower respiratory tract infections, with the disappearance of the respiratory syncytial virus, especially in infants less than one year old.
