Abstract

The three-dimensional interpretation of the relief from 2D representations is a difficult task for engineering students. The use of advanced graphics technologies and digital manufacturing for creating 3D models enables the design and implementation of new teaching and learning strategies. In a workshop with 32 engineering students working with traditional 2D maps, 3D digital representations (augmented reality, 3D viewer) and tangible models (3D printed models and stacked layers DTM), participants increase their ability to interpret the relief in 6.19 points, measured with the Topographic Map Assessment test. Students show preference for tangible 3D models against digital versions for understanding landforms. Low cost 3D modelling technologies facilitate the representation and interpretation of cartographic relief.
