Abstract
Archaeological excavations at Pollentia (Alcúdia, Mallorca) have made it possible to discover some residential neighbourhoods, part of the forum, a theatre, and different necropolises. For the past few years, a late antique fortification has been excavated, built in the first half of the sixth century, probably under Byzantine rule of the island (AD 534-902/903). This wall fortified the old forum and occupied some public spaces such as the decumanus I. Its construction involved the reuse of many building materials from the roman city, mostly large ashlars, and other architectural elements. A few meters north of this defensive structure, some late antique layers with ceramic materials of interest for the understanding of the Byzantine phase of the city were excavated. The study of the ceramic materials allows to date these levels around the end of the sixth century or the beginning of the seventh century and provide information on the commercial and consumption dynamics in Pollentia and contributes to the understanding of the occupation of this sector of the city during the Byzantine period.
