Abstract

Introduction. In this monographic thesis composed of six sections and the conclusions, the gender relations through the financialization of housing in the Balearic Islands are analyzed. An extensive amount of primary data was obtained through the development of an intersectional quantitative methodology, that makes it possible to relate the concepts of financialization, housing and gender. The Intersectional Survey about Housing and Society (EIVS) designed and carried out in the Balearic Islands, in Menorca and Ibiza specifically, supposes a unique research strategy that has allowed the primary data that did not exist until now. It is a strategy that can be replicated in other territories with the same or similar purpose. Research content. The empirical work carried out has resulted in obtaining these primary data on the sociodemographic, socioeconomic, and housing characteristics of the population in the Balearic Islands; and their analysis has allowed the identification of gender inequalities from an intersectional perspective that relates the oppressions and privileges that result from the intersectionality of gender, class and housing. In this way, housing situations and the real estate classes in Menorca and Ibiza and the gender inequalities that derive from them has been a great result. Research findings. The most relevant research results are included into three types: methodological, theoretical and empirical. The research provides, on the one hand, a quantitative intersectional methodology designed and carried out that has effectively revealed the relationships of inequality in housing. On the other hand, the bibliographic review has made visible the current debates and gaps in knowledge about the discussion between financialization, housing and gender. And, finally, the empirical study explains the social inequalities and the gender inequalities, specifically, in Menorca and Ibiza, the most relevant results of which are: the masculinization of speculation, the feminization of real estate impoverishment and the impact of the housing situation on class promotion from men to more privileged real estate classes.
