Resumen

La metodología consensuada internacionalmente para la medición del turismo se ha centrado tradicionalmente en las variables económicas ignorando las dimensiones social y medioambiental. El enfoque dominante ha tenido igualmente una escala nacional, aplicable como mucho al ámbito regional, pero que difícilmente podía ser trasladado a los destinos turísticos locales. Sin embargo, la creciente preocupación por la sostenibilidad del turismo asociada, entre otros, a fenómenos que toman fuerza como el overtourism, así como las posibilidades vinculadas al uso del big data, han generado nuevas necesidades de información y de metodologías que aporten comparabilidad y credibilidad a la medición de los impactos. Para ello hay que salvar tres desafíos principales: en primer lugar, la clarificación en torno al concepto y los enfoques existentes sobre la sostenibilidad del turismo; segundo, explorar las posibilidades que ofrecen las nuevas fuentes información digital y georreferenciada; y finalmente, consensuar internacionalmente metodologías e indicadores que permitan aproximarse a la medición de una realidad tan compleja
