Résumé

A festival conceived as a tool to spread contemporary photography appears for the first time in 1970 in the French city of Arles, with Les Rencontres Internationaux de la Photographie. Its exportation to Latin America is embodied in the festival Encuentros abiertos of Brasil, in 1989, and it later becomes established in 1993 with Fotoseptiembre in Mexico. Ever since then, the number of festivals has continuously increased, and their offer has diversified. The main goals of the present work are to analyse the beginnings of this model of festival in Latin America, to study their organization as well as the different elements that affect them, and to review some of the alternatives that may exist.
