Abstract

Capsule contraction syndrome is an exaggerated reduction in the anterior capsulectomy and equatorial capsular bag diameter after extracapsular cataract surgery. The tissue responsible for the capsule contraction syndrome is made of myofibroblastic cells and other substances produced by them, having their origin in the transformation of the epithelial cells. We believe that the capsule contraction syndrome should be classified into two types: symmetry or asymmetry. Each one is divided in three levels: mild, moderate or severe. The mild level only requires frequent follow-up, in the moderate one a small radial anterior Nd-YAG capsulotomies should be performed, and the severe level requires surgical capsulotomies.
