Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study is to develop a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the available nutritional supplements enriched with omega 3 fatty acids which are recommended for patients with Age-Realted Macular Degeneration (AMD). Method: Firstly we searched for products commercialized as «dietary supplements for AMD enriched with omega 3 fatty acids». We performed a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the following components: omega 3 acid, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and copper. Results: We identified 10 dietary supplements, among which the mean quantity of omega 3 acid was 331±167.43 mg, 211.11±85.36 mg of DHA. Five of them contain EPA, with an average quantity of 141.3±145.07 mg. Conclusion: Ophtalmologists should inform our DMAE patients about the correct posology of the available dietary supplements, as in most of them the dose of omega 3 (DHA and EPA) should double the quantity recommended by the information given in the products packages.
