Resum

Objective: To analyze patients having undergone amniotic membrane transplantation in our hospital. Material and Methods: Cross-sectional study in patients having undergone amniotic membrane transplantation during year 2014. Data collection was performed by analyzing the electronic medical records. The medical record numbers were obtained from the electronic database of the Transplants Coordination Section. Information on the following variables was collected: age, sex, surgically treated eye, initial and final visual acuity, ocular history, personal history, ophthalmic indication of transplantation, number of transplants performed on the same patient, surgical procedure associated and duration of the membrane. Regarding the ocular background, special interest was taken in the pathology of the ocular surface, use of contact lens and previous surgery Results: A total of 22 medical records were analyzed. The mean age of the patients was 18.44 +/- 62.23 years. The gender distribution was 40.9% female and 59.1% male. All patients underwent surgical treatment of a single eye except for one person who had both eyes treated simultaneously. Regarding the treated eye, 68.2% of cases involved the left eye and 31.8% the right eye. The main indication for transplantation of amniotic membrane was herpetic corneal ulcer. Discussion: Amniotic membrane transplantation -both considered as a single surgical technique or associated to others- is a common surgical practice in ocular surface disease. In our case herpetic corneal ulcer was the main indication for transplant.
