Abstract

Objective: To evaluate quantitative assessment of retinal thickness in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME) using two optical coherence tomography (OCT) instruments. Secondarily, to compare the results classified by colours with the correspondent normal database. Methods: Descriptive prospective study with patients with DME who were studied by Cirrus SD-OCT® (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA, USA) and Scan-Duo OCT® (Nidek Retina Scan Duo, Aichi, Japan) on the same day during one month. Data collection and analysis was carried out with SPSS. Results: 16 eyes with DME out of a total of 160 were included, with a mean age of 68 years. Mean signal strength was superior to 7 by both systems and correctly centred. No statistically significant differences regarding macular thickness were found between both instruments, but a moderate degree of coincidence on macular cube colour distribution was established. Conclusions: Both spectral-domain Cirrus-SD® and Scan-Duo® systems are interchangeable when it comes to macular thickness. A moderate degree of agreement on macular cube color distribution was found. We should emphasize the small sample size as a limiting factor
