Abstract

Introduction: Diabetic macular edema (DME) is the main cause of loss of visual acuity in patients with diabetic retinopathy. In the last century, multiple systems have emerged with the aim to classify and evaluate DME. Objective: To review the different published EMD classifications, their uses, advantages and disadvantages. Methods: A review of the literature review was performed, based on articles related to the classification of DME. A consultation of clinical guidelines from the main scientific organizations for the management of DME was carried out. Results: The main classifications of DME are based on funduscopy, fluorescein angiography and optical coherence tomography. The different classifications available provide information on the structural status of the retina, help to document the evolution of edema, and in some cases can predict treatment response. Conclusion: There is currently no international consensus regarding which DME classification should be used. The ideal classification system should combine accuracy to document the DME and to predict treatment response, and ease of use in daily clinical practice.
