Abstract

In this paper, we present an exploratory study about mathematical understanding for teaching, in a context where technology is used to solve problems. A case study is displayed: a group of 4 students of the Degree in Mathematics, which solves a variation-problem with GeoGebra and a protocol that integrates several approaches to the problem. Data analysed were the students’ written documents and the recording of their presentation of the solution of the task. The results show evidence of both the students’ mathematical competence and mathematical activity. Finally, we discuss the contributions of the GeoGebra and the protocol to these results, as well as their limitations.
