Abstract

The existing models developed within the framework of phraseology were criticised as inffective by Sinncr/Tabares Plasencia (2016) who recommend to address this phenomenon from the perspective of variational linguistics, as both sub-disciplines of linguistics, Phraseology and variational linguistics, pursue similar objectivcs. ln this study, we propose to apply thc concept of variant, as it is used in variational linguistics, to describe and classify the variation of phraseological units. We analyse the intersection between idiolect and sociolect (including the functiolects), that is, the overlappíng of the individual and the group level, that have to be taken into consideration when establishing the invariant of a phraseological unit, and the methodology on order to achieve this differentiation. The contribution advocates for a change of the research paradigms, especially regarding the method of data collection and concerming the analysis of the variation in phraseology. A turn to the use of large corpus is recommended, both written and oral, synchronic and diachronic, and covering different linguistic registers, etc., as on!y such an approach allows for a clear delimitation of thc different types of variants that are found and of the basic forms of the phraseological units.
