Abstract
The Descent of the Virgin of the Snows is a festivity of a traditional popular nature that have become a reference point on the island of La Palma. They have their own artistic characteristics where music and dance are performed at different times and under different typologies. In this work, we will focus on the music that takes place during the «Dance of the Mascarones». The set of works that we discuss below are of both foreign and local origin and correspond to different artistic periods. Thus, we will delve into formal intra-musical aspects that show the specific characteristics of the works performed, the possible influences and aspects common to all of them. Finally, we conclude that the commented works of different musical forms and genres present common characteristics such as a strong rhythmic-harmonic character and, on occasions, they present their own characteristics and adaptations to the «Dances of the Mascarones», especially in the local compositions.
