Abstract

Spain is a multicultural society because immigration in recent decades has significantly changed the human landscape of our towns and cities. This significant change is accompanied by the effects of the economic crisis and globalization of jihadist terrorism. We wonder about the consequences of these phenomena on security, real and perceived. Since the recognition of security as a basic need, we take the construct “social cohesion” to establish the nexus between security and education, demonstrating that the school is the privilege place for developing social cohesion policies favoring a safer society. Finally, we provide a critical review of the policy of schooling in Spain, showing the overall system fragmentation and the exclusion of certain groups of immigrants. We note how choosing a school freely is an individual right that affects social cohesion and that, to safety.
