Abstract

: For years, the relationship between psychosis and some neurological diseases such as epilepsy has been studied. It has been observed an increased prevalence of psychotic pictures in subjects with epilepsy as well as epileptic seizures in individuals diagnosed with psychosis in a bidirectional way. Likewise, the existence of some types of secondary psychosis, related to seizures and classified according to their moment of appearance has been noticed. These psychotic disorders have been called “epileptic psychoses”, and some types can be confused with some primary psychotic disorders. This can make definitive diagnosis and therapeutic management difficult. In this article we review the existing bibliography with the intention of synthesizing the evidence on epilepsy psychoses, previously carrying out a brief historical review. Finally, we conclude that more research is needed to help clarify the relationship between epilepsy and psychosis, since some aspects such as presentation, symptoms, or duration may overlap.
