Abstract

Due to the growing interest in the presence of Sephardic Jews in Vienna, the question of German elements in Judeo-Spanish is now beginning to receive more attention. This contribution offers an overview of the different points of contact between Judeo-Spanish and German. Subsequently, the way in which the German influence is seen in Judeo-Spanish linguistics is analysed. In this context, a critical review is given of the methods used in the existing studies on German elements in Judeo-Spanish and of the results obtained so far. The contribution then focuses on the German influence present in Judeo-Spanish texts, proposing a classification of Germanicisms with respect to the type of influence and their function, and examining whether these penetrated Judeo-Spanish directly or through other mediating languages.
