Abstract

In this work we present a competence model adapted from Socas (2001), in which some aspects related with the coherent articulation of different representation registers are considered (Duval 1993). This model constitutes the basis for the conceptual analysis of the understanding of the definite integral and it was used to analyze an interview carried out on six students of Calculus I from the Polytechnic University UNEXPO (Venezuela). It’s definitively to determine not only the conception that the students have of the area limited by a curve but also the definite integral. The interview was developed after carrying out an instruction that uses as curricular material a group of Laboratory Practice (LP) designed with the CAS (Computer Algebra System) DERIVE, and we used Utility File (UF) designed for the teaching of definite integral. We present the analysis from an interview to three of the six students, which allows us to compare our competence model with that of the student's performance and to place the student in a category, according to the preset criteria.
