Resumen

A morphometric analysis of the five accepted species of the moss genus Gymnostomiella is presented including G orcutti and G tanganytikae which were previously considered synonymous of G vernicosa and G erosula respectively The PCA analysis Includes G monodu G orcutti and ail two described varieties of G vernicosa (var vernicosa and var tenerum) in the same group whereas G ero stria G longinervis and G tuberculosa are clearly differentiated G tanganyikae is also included in other group together with G crosula Our results indicate that there are no morphological reasons to separate G monodu and G vernicosa into different species The morphometric distances obtained between G orcutii G vernicosa var tenerum and G monodii are similar and lower than those obtained between these taxa and G erosula G longinervis and G tuberculosa Therefore G monodu and G vernicosa var tenerum are synonymised with G vernicosa var vernicosa.
