Abstract

Introduction: The association between variations in pain intensity and weather changes is present in physiotherapy clinical practice. This review aims to determine the current knowledge regarding the interaction between pain and climate. Methods: A systematic search of 4 databases (PEDro, Scopus, MEDLINE and CINAHL) and the PubMed search engine was performed to identify studies conducted on this topic in the last thirteen years. Results: A total of 1082 articles were found, which were reduced to 17 when the search criteria were applied: two of them dealt with acute pain, fourteen with chronic pain, and one with pain without previous pathology. Only two reviews were included: one narrative and one systematic. They were evaluated using two rating scales: PEDro and an expert scale developed by the authors. Conclusions: The study of the pain-climate association is complicated. Concerning chronic pain, there is an association; however, it does not seem clinically significant, and very few pathologies are considered to cause it, so the number of studies would need to be increased to reach a clear conclusion.
