Abstract

In this work, we aim to delve into the approaches and perspectives of the Aeneid and the Nauigatio Sancti Brendanito demonstrate how the former could have served as a model for the composition of the latter in the 9th century. While there is no literal copying of passages, there is an affinity of themes suggesting that the text of Virgil wasconsulted by the Brendanian anonymous author. Although their objectives may differ, the evolution of their ownmotives in travel narratives allows for the recognition of shared context. The epithet “pius”, traditionally attributedto Aeneas, is also applied to Brendan, as both heroes symbolize integrity, virtue, purity, and honesty. Through thisidea, we arrive at a much broader analysis of common interests, which describe not only a simply literary orreligious reflection, but the pursuit of the construction of identities of two peoples.
