Resumen

Gods and men in ruling the Roman republic · This article takes its cue from the assumption that responsibility for ruling Rome fell jointly on the public authorities, physicallyrepresented by magistrates and senators, as well on the gods that the Republic regarded as its“guardian” deities. In this inquiry, I have tried to justify such assumption by documenting andexploring the grounds and principles underlying such cooperation between gods and men, aswell as the institutional, political and social implications of having gods involved in the government’s responsibilities. The limits of this inquiry strictly lie in the understanding of the scopeof the relationship between gods and men, which is the ultimate purpose of this paper, and anyextensive discussion and digression is contingent on such main goal.KùčċăĆøć · Roman History, Roman Republic, Roman Government, Roman Religion, RomanPublic Divination, Roman Polytheism
