Covert 19th century political intrigues of Tenerife nobility revealed by cryptanalyzing an encrypted letter

Resumo

This article presents a cryptanalysis of a 19th-centuryencrypted manuscript discovered in the archives of Conde deSiete Fuentes in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. The manu-script, preserved by the heirs of the 6th Count of Valle deSalazar, utilizes a polyalphabetic substitution cipher. The crypt-analysis was performed by applying statistical frequency ana-lysis and developing a Python script for decryption, resultingin the authors successfully deciphering the message. Thedecrypted letter reveals political communications discussingthe strategic positioning of Tenerife as the capital, the dissol-ution of local councils, and the influence of key political fig-ures. The analysis compares the cipher with historicalencryption techniques, and identifies the unique characteris-tics of the manuscript’s encryption method. The study high-lights the political dynamics and alliances within Tenerife’snobility and their interactions with the central Spanish govern-ment, providing significant insights into, both, the crypto-graphic practices and political maneuvers of the time.
