Abstract

Foredune is formed by aeolian sand deposition in vegetation on the backshore. It is a landform structure produced by biogeomorphological processes that depend on multiple environmental factors (wind regime, precipitation, temperature, sediment supply, vegetation, among others). The objective of this research is to characterise the foredune of the beach-dune systems of Cape Verde, especially on the islands of Sal and Boa Vista, in order to understand, in a preliminary way, its nature and the threats that may be affecting its natural processes. For this, a fieldwork was carried out in June 2023 where data on morphological and vegetation variables were collected in four plots. Results show that the foredune is formed by "nebkhas" type biogeoforms, and the structuring vegetation is mainly herbaceous with xerophytic and halophytic species such as Sesuvium portulacastrum, Tetraena fontanesii, Tetraena waterlotii and Suaeda caboverdeana. However, some factors that may be controlling the natural distribution of the nebkhas that make up the foredune are shown and discussed.
