La investigación sobre la biodiversidad marina y la conservación de especies, ecosistemas y recursos es de gran importancia hoy en día en las políticas de desarrollo sostenible, lo que también se traduce en una creciente demanda de especialistas y gerentes cualificados, es decir, en la formación universitaria avanzada. Estos son los objetivos desarrollados en Canarias por el grupo de investigación Botánica Marina-ULL durante las últimas tres décadas, centrados en las macroalgas y fanerógamas marinas bentónicas.
