Doctor by the Universidad de La Laguna with the thesis A study of chromosome segregation where persistent DNA junctions are present between sister chromatids carried out in "Saccharomyces cerevisiae" 2015. Supervised by Dr. Félix Machín.
2024-Present: I obtained a Ramón y Cajal contract from the Spanish Research Agency to establish my own line of research in the Department of Physiology at the University of La Laguna. The research lines of the laboratory focus on 1) understanding how SMC complexes organize chromosomes throughout the cell cycle and the mechanisms of coordination between them, and 2) studying the role of the SMC5/6 complex in restricting extrachromosomal DNA molecules. 2021-2024: I obtained a Juan de la Cierva Incorporation contract from the Spanish Research Agency to continue developing my research at the interface between the field of chromosome maintenance complexes (SMC) and cellular and viral immunity in the laboratory of Agustín Valenzuela-Fernández in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of La Laguna. 2014-2021: I conducted my postdoctoral stage in the DNA motors laboratory, led by Dr. Luis Aragón at the London Institute of Medical Sciences. During this period, my research focused on how DNA-binding proteins govern chromosomal topology and genetic stability, with particular emphasis on structural maintenance of chromosome complexes and chromatin remodelers. I was funded by Imperial College through a Wellcome Trust foundation project and later by UKRI. 2008-2014: I completed my doctoral stage in the laboratory of Dr. Felix Machin at the Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria University Hospital. During this period, my research focused on studying DNA repair mechanisms and chromosomal segregation. I was initially funded by the Canary Islands Research and Health Foundation and later through a contract for university teacher training (FPU) from the Ministry of Education. 2002-2008: During my time as a biology student, I completed a one-year Erasmus stay at the University of Sheffield. During this period, I developed a final degree project in the laboratory of Dr. Enrique Martinez Perez, studying meiotic segregation using the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans.
