MD (1981) and PhD (1983) in Medicine from the University of La Laguna (ULL), DEA (Diploma in Advanced Studies: PhD ABD) in Social and Cultural Anthropology (Philosophy) from the URiV, Specialist in Clinical Pharmacology and Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the ULL School of Medicine, where he has been teaching since the year 1982. He has been Dean from 2008 to October 2015, when he ceased and took office as Director of the Department of Physical Medicine and Pharmacology until February 2020 (when his term ended). Since April 2019 he has been the Head of the Clinical Pharmacology Service of the Hospital Universitario de Canarias. During the years 1986-1988 he stayed as post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Clinical Pharmacology of the Karolinska Institute, in Stockholm, Sweden. Among his main lines of research are Pharmacovigilance and the Epidemiology of Medicines, especially in the field of Psychopharmacology and pediatrics, as well as medical anthropology (the cultural role of medicine in society) and Bioethics. Since 1989 he has participated and co-directed several European projects on social and cultural aspects of the use of medicines, using qualitative methodologies, in four projects coordinated with 10 other countries of the European Union. As a result of these works, he has published and edited several books on drug-related aspects of medical anthropology. During the 2015-17 period, he was elected president of DIPEX International (, a scientific association that brings together scientists from 14 countries in this field, currently he is president of DIPEX Spain ( He is the author of more than 90 research papers and 40 books or book chapters. He is also a member of 12 Scientific Societies. He is Managing Editor of the "European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology". He speaks and writes fluent English and Swedish, as well as Spanish. He has been Secretary of the School of Medicine of the ULL (1995-97) and Vice-Dean (2005-8) and Secretary of the National Conference of Deans of Medicine from 2010 to 2015. Since 1983, and until the present, he is a member of the Deontological and Ethics Commission of the Official College of Physicians of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, being its President from 1999 to 2008. He is President of the CEIm (Research Ethics Committee Clinic with medicines) of the Hospital Universitario de Canarias (HUC), covering the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and member of the CEIm of Hospital Dr. Negrín (which covers the province of Las Palmas). He is also the Vice President of the Ethical Committee for Research and Animal Welfare of the University of La Laguna, since its creation in November 1999 and has the D1 Accreditation in accordance with Royal Decree 1201/2005, for the supervision of animal research. He is also President of the Healthcare Ethics Committee of the "Hospital Universitario de Canarias" of the Canarian Health Service, as well as a member of the Bioethics Advisory Commission of the government of the Canary Islands. Since 2003 he has been the Director of the Interuniversity Master's Degree in Bioethics. It is an official Master's degree from the universities of La Laguna and Las Palmas and its XI edition is being developed in the 2020-21 academic year.
