Carlos De Las Cuevas is a Spanish psychiatrist and academic who has worked extensively in the field of psychopharmacology, clinical psychiatry, and medical education. He is currently a full professor of psychiatry at the University of La Laguna in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, where he has been teaching and researching for more than three decades. His research work has been focused in promoting critical thinking in psychiatry, as well as the ethical use of psychotropic drugs. He has been a vocal critic of the influence of the pharmaceutical industry on psychiatric research and practice, and has called for greater transparency and accountability in the development and marketing of psychiatric drugs. Prof. De las Cuevas has published numerous research articles on various aspects of psychopharmacology and clinical psychiatry, including extensive research on the factors that influence medication adherence, patient autonomy and shared decision-making in psychiatry. De las Cuevas' work has tried to contribute to a better understanding of the complex factors that influence medication adherence in psychiatric patients, and has emphasized the importance of a patient-centered approach to treatment. His research has also highlighted the need for healthcare providers to take a proactive approach to addressing non-adherence, which can ultimately lead to better patient outcomes and improved quality of care. Finally, Prof. De las Cuevas' work in the field of pharmacoepidemiology has contributed to a better understanding of the safety and effectiveness of psychotropic medications, and has highlighted the importance of taking a population-based approach to assessing the benefits and risks of psychiatric medication use. Professor Carlos De las Cuevas leads the research group at the University of La Laguna on "Therapeutic Adherence." He is also the coordinator of the working group of the Spanish Society of Psychiatry and Mental Health on "Treatment Adherence in Psychiatry." Professor De las Cuevas is a member of the editorial board of indexed journals such as "Current Drug Safety," "International Journal of Telemedicine & Applications," and "Patient Preference and Adherence." Additionally, he is a member of the expert panel for the journals "Biological Psychiatry" and "Journal of Psychiatry and Mental Health." He has been awarded the "Accredited Researcher of the Research Excellence Program" award in 2007 and the "Reference Researcher" award in 2016 by the Spanish Society of Psychiatry and the Spanish Society of Biological Psychiatry.
