The increase in CO2 emissions in Spain since the mid nineties has been considered a puzzle by many experts. Such a puzzle might not be so when the evolution of emissions is related with the housing boom during those years. In this paper it is shown that the increase in emissions goes parallel to a steady increase in energy consumption by those manufacturing industries supplying concrete, glass, plaster and ceramics to the construction sector, as well as to the related transport activities. Thus, a change in economic structure to a new sustainable economy in Spain could benefit not only productivity, competitiveness and the labor market, but also compliance with international environmental commitments. Looking forward to seeing such a change taking place, the paper provides evidence on the energy and environmental consequences of the housing bust.
