Résumé

Biofuels have an important role to play in the process of replacing fossil fuels by renewable energies. Two key issues are the increase in energy security and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions that are expected from that process. In this paper we use economic theory and econometrics to analyze quantitatively these two issues at the aggregate level. On the one hand, we implement efficient portfolio theory to suggest strategies for the diversification of risks associated to transport sectors fuel inputs. On the other hand, we use growth theory and panel data econometrics to quantify the extent to which biofuels can contribute to mitigation of CO2 emissions. These analyses require an understanding of the state of the technology and the economic environment for biofuels which are both described first.
