Resumo

The aim of this study is to examine the relevance of gender roles on the adolescents’ physical activity, analyzing the association between the practice of physical exercise, well-being and self-esteem. The sample consists of 788 adolescents (45.9% boys and 54.1% girls) aged between 13 and 18 years. We found that the boys did more exercise than girls. In boys, sex typing was associated with more physical exercise, while the girls with more women typing spent less time engaged in sports. In boys, a greater practice of physical activity was associated with more positive relationships, better self-reported health, more instrumental social support and younger age. In girls, the practice of physical activity was associated with greater self-acceptance, purpose in life, personal growth and self-confidence
