Abstract
In three experiments we examined the process of meaning resolution of ambiguous words embedded in short texts. Each text contained two occurrences of an ambiguous word, either with the same or different meanings in both occurrences (Experiment 1). Immediately after the second occurrence of the ambiguous word, and after several time intervals (ISIs) a target for a lexical decision task was introduced aimed at testing the activation of the ambiguous word meanings and their temporal course. The results showed that the meaning activated during the first occurrence of the ambiguous word (global context) remained activated over several sentences, because it become incorporated into the global representation of the text. Experiments 2 y 3 replicated and consolidated this global coherence effect, ruling out alternative hypotheses in terms of lexical associative processes
