Abstract
The paper reports the results of a research study on the influence of reading methods on students intellectual work capacity during the reading process; specifically, methods emphasizing significant decodification processes versus methods aimed at topdown processes or that emphasize the signified (e.g., global-natural). The use of information while reading and studying descriptive and narrative texts was analysed in a sample of 565 female and male students from different socio-economic status and attending private and public schools. Data was collected on their ability to put a title to a text, summarize it, extract the main ideas and answer questions on it. Results show that the global-natural method contributes to the development of better intellectual work capacity, particularly with respect to summarizing and extracting the main ideas without a text in front.
