El español de Canarias en la obra de Manuel Alvar

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to emphasize the important role of Manuel Alvar in the study of the Spanish spoken in the Canary Islands. Of special interest is this book El español hablado en Tenerife, 1959, wich provides an overview of the speech of the people in Tenerife. In this article we pay special attention to his outstandirig contribution to the study of Canarian modality, as well as to the impact to his work on dialectology, not only in the Canary Islands but also in the entire Spanish-speaking world. In the second part of this paper, we review the studies published in Estudios de dialectología dedicados a Manuel Alvar, con motivo del XL aniversario de la publicación de ((E/ español hablado en Tenerife».
