Abstract
e present article intends studies the presence of several subjects related to the foundation of the church of Our Lady of the Candelària from Rio de Janeiro by the captain of boat and passenger to Indians of the island from La Palma, Antonio Martins da Palma and his wife, Leonor Gonçalves, in the decade of 1630. In addition, the historical evolution of the same parish will study during 18th until arriving at the construction of the present church at the beginning of 19th. At the end of that century, the painter João Zeferino da Costa, by order of the Brotherhood of the Santísimo Sacramento, will paint a series of fresh gathering the moment of the foundation by the canary mentioned ones, being the best artistic testimony of the relations between the Canary Islands and Brazil.
