Abstract
Francisco Hernández’s medical treatise has attracted the attention of linguists thanks to its large quantity of American indigenous words, most of which happen to be first recorded for historical lexicography by the work of this Toledan physician. But apart from this, and just as Bartolomé de las Casas’s SpanishAmerican chronicles,or those byGonzaloFernández deOviedo orJean-BaptisteLabat, Hernández’s text, it also presents important notes on particular cultural aspects of American history which, so far not taken into account,can help us to get a deeper insight into other lexical fields. In this article we analyze chapter XIV («De Sachari Arvndinibvs») of De materia Medica Novae Hispaniae, a work originally written in Latin, as well as the subsequent Castillian translation published by Francisco Ximénez at the beginning of the 17th century.
