Abstract

The low levels of food self-sufficiency are a matter of growing and permanent concern in the Canary Islands. This text presents a synoptic vision of available empirical evidence and identifies some of the «myths» which abound in public and published opinion when it comes to explaining and valuing the dependence on food imports. Fatalistic and utopian discourses will be typified and analyzed as a mean to contrast the main arguments used in the ongoing debate. Special at- tention will be given to the impact of EU agricultural policies (POSEI) and some of the alternative options for increasing food self-sufficiency are presented.
