Abstract

The present work deals with the discussion about the use of translation as a tool for the acquisition of a new language. Starting from a historical perspective it makes a brief journey through the teaching methods of Latin from the Renaissance to the present, focusing especially on the origin of the grammar-translation method in the XVIII century and its reformulation in contact with modern methods from the teaching classroom of foreign language (FL), giving rise to the current concept of pedagogical translation and its application in Latin classes. From this point on, a working method is proposed for classes at the university, in which pedagogical translation serves as a tool for the acquisition of linguistic and literary knowledge for a better understanding and hermeneutics of classical texts, and which is complemented by the knowledge and practice of literary translation.
