Abstract

The formation of the first scientific societies was an important step in the process of gestation of prehistoric archeology as a discipline with a unique professional identity. In this work we analyze the different institutions of the Canary Islands, from the first nineteenth century scientific societies to the archaeological museums of the 21st century, and we study how the definition of the indigenous past in the Canaries has been built on the concept of culture, which has generated the ensuing inventory of cultural, linguistic and material traits. From this premise, we will show what the resulting image of the indigenous Canarian cultures has been, an image that is also evident in areas such as politics, administrative practice, legislation and heritage management.
