Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to analyze the behavior of fiveSpanish newspapers that extensively discussed a speech act uttered by theSpanish King Juan Carlos I on April 19, 2012. This is an apology to the Spanishpeople for participating in an African Safari:“I’m sorry. I was wrong and it willnot happen again”. The important social criticism derived led to question theMonarch in many sectors of Spanish public life. The very fact, exceptional dueto the nature of the protagonist, acquired therefore a high media profile. News-papers referred to in this study (El País,El Mundo,ABC,La RazónandLa Gace-ta) collaborated in the restoration of the royal image once apologies werewidely accepted. Thus, the concept of ideological politeness as a strategic me-chanism fostered by journalistic discourse is proposed.
