Abstract
The lost wax casting technique for the production of metal parts is used by different cultures in the history of mankind. Its procedures have been adapted to the technology in use at the time leaving a record of it, either in Egyptian funeral monuments, in artistic works from Mesopotamia or Greece, among others, or collected in texts, manuals and treaties. In this article, a tour is shown that presents us the evolution of the techniques of the molds with refractory coating, and for that reason, a retrospective can be made that indicates us that the technique of the chamotte and the ceramic shell, evidently, successors to the primitive technique, have been adapted to the technological advances of each one of the different cultures reaching their own characteristics so that they were more effective and profitable. The characteristics of the paste of the refractory mould are described from the beginning until the most used technique nowadays with its technical derivatives that demonstrate that the procedures of the artistic smelting are in constant adaptation and simplification to economize and to simplify the production of pieces according to the needs.
