Abstract

Objective: To find out how people with severe mental disorder (SMD) who attend mental health services perceive stigma. Material and Method: Qualitative phenomenological study, with convenience and purposive sampling. An interview was developed, of which 3 questions were related to social rejection and stigma. A focus group of 5 people and 16 individual interviews were conducted with people with TMG. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, coded and analysed with the support of N-vivo software. Results: The majority of participants reported suffering or having suffered social rejection and stigma as a result of having a mental illness. When analysing their strategies to combat stigma, we found that some protect themselves by hiding or denying the mental illness and isolating themselves, others maintain a passive attitude, while a few make it visible. Participants express that structural stigma is not as present in the mental health services they attend, such as mental health units, psychosocial rehabilitation resources, day centres or occupational workshops. Conclusions: Despite efforts to combat stigma at the institutional level, discrimination and social rejection are present and are demonstrated by the strategies used to defend themselves, such as hiding or denial of mental illness, isolation, social avoidance, passive attitude or denial of stigma and only a few make their illness visible and try to be understood and accepted by others.
