Abstract

Héroes del Silencio has been one of the most remarkable rock bands in the Spanish popular music scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The band had an appealing discourse for most of the audience, in which lyrics were an important feature that made it stand out above the rest. These texts were written by its singer, Enrique Bunbury, and contained a metaphorical language infused with literary aspirations. In fact, Bunbury’s own statements showed a fondness for poetry and authors such as Blake or Verlaine. The main goal of this article is to show how Bunbury’s penchant for literature contributed to the identity of the band, as well as to analyse the role played by lyrics in the configuration of the band’s discourse. For this purpose I have chosen their songs “Mar adentro”, “El estanque” and “El mar no cesa”, as well as the video of “Sirena varada”. These are well-known works of the band which exemplify its tendency to include the poetic image of the sea in their songs. Using an interdisciplinary methodology, I examine how in the band’s production the literary text is combined with music and image to convey an ambiguous message to the audience: Héroes del Silencio defined itself as an “authentic” rock band while introducing artifice through the rhetoric of its lyrics, which is emphasized by the musical and audiovisual discourse.
