Resum

The sedimentary record of Laguna Grande of Villafáfila has been studied from a sedimentological and paleontolo- gical viewpoint. The 3.05 m long drill core consists of silicilclastic deposits (quartz, phyllosilicates and feldspar) made up of: 1) very fine sandstones with carbonate crusts from 3.05 to 1.8 m.; and 2) siltstones with diffuse calcite cementation from 1.8 to 0 m. The fossil content, poor in the lower interval, consists of palynomorphs, charophytes and ostracods; benthic forami- nifers, insect larvae, and gastropods are locally present in the upper interval. The sedimentary and paleontological features indicate evolution from a fluvial flood plain environment in the lower 1.2 m to wetland conditions along the remaining 1.8 m. Both domains show signs of ephemeral subaerial exposure.
