Abstract
The use of canarian endemic species in the field of horticulture is becoming common practice. This is mainly due to the spectacular beauty of numerous endemisms, which constitutean alternative, a priori with lower maintenance costs, to the use of an exotic ornamental flora sometimes problematic (invasive, allergenic, toxic, etc.). However, this use is often made without a proper planning. Due to this, some endemisms have artificially extended their distribution area in the archipelago. In the present work it has been elaborated a preliminary catalog of the endemic species observed as cultivated in the island of El Hierro. On this island we have identified several non-native Canarian endemism growing in or near landscaped areas, so that we have proceeded to collect plant material for its correct identification. For each one, chorological data are provided, as well as the evidence on its naturalization and inclusion in the wild flora of the island. In some cases, the problems derived from the high number of individuals of non-native endemic species in the local plant biota in diverse populations (competition, displacement, hybridizations, etc.) are discussed. The aim of this study is to alert of its presence on the island and to collaborate in finding solutions for the correct use of endemism as ornamental.
